At a recent meeting of the Reveliers Toastmasters Club here in Omaha, Nebraska, the word of the day was polyglot. Traditionally, a polyglot is someone who speaks multiple languages. But as soon as I heard it, my mind went in a different direction—because in my world, polyglotism isn't just about words. It's about skills. It's about stepping into a discipline, getting your footing, and then realizing that the landscape is way bigger than you ever imagined.

I think about this every time I take on something new—martial arts, magic, comedy—but especially juggling. Because when you first learn to juggle, you start simple: scarves. Light, slow, forgiving. Then comes the first challenge: juggling balls. They move faster. They require timing and control. Once you have that down, clubs enter the picture—and suddenly, you're not just juggling, you're spinning objects through space.

But here's the part no one tells you when you start: that’s just the beginning.

The world of juggling doesn't stop with clubs. It expands outward—yo-yos, spinning tops, diabolos (also called Chinese yo-yos), rings, fire torches, and yes, for the particularly daring, chainsaws. (Not me—I prefer to be a juggler with two arms, thank you very much.)

Each of these props introduces its own rules, its own physics, its own language. And the deeper you go, the more you realize that the skills don’t just stack—they connect. Learning one thing makes the next thing possible. And that, to me, is the essence of what it means to be a polyglot: embracing multiple disciplines within a field, always learning, always expanding your repertoire, always challenging yourself.

Because here’s the thing: You don’t grow by standing still.

That’s what the hero’s journey is all about. It’s why “beginner’s luck” is such a powerful concept—you get just enough success to catch a glimpse of what’s possible. And that’s what keeps you moving forward. I love showing people this journey, helping them see that wherever they are—whether it's juggling, speaking, business, or life—they are standing on the edge of something bigger than they realize.
